BMW K1600GT Reveal

German motorsports giant, BMW, unveiled its latest sport-touring offerings, the 2012 BMW K1600GT and K1600GTL motorcycles today at the powersports Mecca that is Jay Leno’s garage in Southern California. These motorcycles replace the current Inline Four-powered BMW K1300S and K1300GT.

As promised the new BMW’s sport an ultra high-tech Inline Six engine that showcases the German’s company’s engineering know-how. For more technical information about the engine and sub-systems make sure to check out our 2011 BMW K1600GT First Look and BMW Unveils K1600GT at INTERMOT posts. For this article we’ll feature some of the other specifications that haven’t yet been discussed.

The K1600 GT has been engineered specifically for solo riding. It still offers a passenger seat but it was designed first and foremost to whisk the rider to his destination as quickly and comfortably as possible. The ergonomics are designed to deliver a sportier ride and the seat is more firm which in turn delivers more feedback to what’s happening at the business end of the tires.

Seat height is also adjustable, offering between 30.7 inch or 31.5 inch settings. The rear suspension has been calibrated with firmer damping settings. In terms of aesthetics the engine and the lower body panels are contrasting in color which helps show off the sides of the engine. The GT comes standard with two removable side cases and an optional top case is available to increase cargo capacity.

Where the GT is designed more for sport riding, the GTL is engineered for cross-country touring where comfort is paramount. Seat height has been reduced to 29.5 inches, is much wider and has extra padding. The arrangement of the handlebar and footpegs has been modified to make the bike comfortable to operate for extended periods of time. Other ergonomic improvement including a larger electronically adjustable windscreen and more forgiving rear suspension damping settings.

Both motorcycles share a host of standard features including: xenon headlights (inspired from its car line-up), heated seats/grips, cruise control, 5.7 inch color LCD display, ABS, color-matched and removable side bags, luggage rack, adjustable engine power modes and full LED lighting. Furthermore the GTL adds an advanced, automotive-derived Bluetooth and iPhone compatible audio and communication system (includes SIRIUS Satellite Radio w/ a one year subscription). This is also available as an option on the GT model.
Other available options include the adaptive headlight system (moves right or left and up/or down automatically), dynamic traction control, electronically adjustable suspension, central locking system, tire pressure monitor, alarm, and modular GPS that can be neatly integrated into the cockpit of the motorcycle. All of the electronic features can be controlled via the five-way ring controller mounted on the left handlebar. With the controller the rider can work through the LCD menu system and modify each setting without taking their eyes off the road.

Both bikes are claimed to weigh just over 700 pounds ready to ride. The GT makes use of a 6.3-gallon capacity fuel tank where the more touring-oriented GTL gets an extra 0.7-gallon capacity. Despite its weight and increased engine size, BMW claims that both bikes actually deliver greater fuel efficiency than the K1300s. Pricing hasn’t’ been announced on either model, but BMW says that they will begin arriving in dealerships in the U.S. during the spring of 2011. BMW dealers will begin taking orders for the new bikes in January through a pre-sales campaign which allows buyers to “reserve” their machine so they can ride it home as soon as it hits the dealership.

The New Toyota Supra

Toyota started the Supra project back in the days when it was still testing the ground to see if it could sell Luxury vehicles in the US, of course, now that Lexus is dominating the luxury segment in the states (and not doing too badly here either), the answer was an obvious yes.

However a few years ago Toyota went a little crazy, they decided that they no longer needed proper sports cars, they dumped the MR2 (After they turned it into the revolting male hairdresser car, which was its last incarnation), they dumped the Celica (having already dumped the GT4 version of the celicas some time ago) and they had already given up on the Supra back in 2002.
So whilst I say toyota gave up on sports cars, they of course had the Lexus IS series, but since Toyota wants to stay very separate to Lexus, there is no point in counting the IS series as part of Toyota’s sports line up. Hence began the era of “Sportivo” the horrible name associated with front-wheel-drive vehicles that were nothing more than a last minute decision to add some “sportyness” to the brand.
Of course for those who bought the likes of Camry/Corollo Sportivos, the sheer shame of driving a car named sportivo should have been enough disappointment, but Toyota has gotten away with having no real sports car for a very long time!
So enough about Toyota’s mistakes, lets just take a few minutes and admire this car:

Audi S6 Review

Fast four-doors have been around forever, but the Audi S6 provides an enticing mix of people-friendly room, blistering speed all-weather traction and brand-name cachet. Three generations of S6 have graced our shores to date, though their sporadic appearances and truncated lifespans sure bring new meaning to the term "limited edition."
From the start, the S6's mission has been to be an extra-special version of Audi's already special A6 -- an end usually achieved by means of more power, a sportier suspension and performance-biased wheels and brakes. The S6 has always been abundant with the luxury content expected of Audi, and its midsize dimensions make it one of the better Audis for seating multiple passengers. Just keep in mind that the S6 focuses on performance, and as such its ride quality is harder-edged than that of other Audi vehicles.
The Audi S6 is unique for skipping the evolutionary progress common to most cars, as its performance leaps by one league at a time. From a 227-horsepower five-cylinder in the first S6 to a 340-hp V8 in the next and finally to the 435-hp V10 of today, the S6 has been a reflection of Audi's rapidly rising performance aspirations.
Current Audi S6
The Audi S6 is a high-performance version of the A6 sedan powered by a Lamborghini-sourced 5.2-liter V10. While slightly revised and detuned, it still produces 425 hp and 398 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic and a 40/60 rear-biased Quattro all-wheel-drive system are standard. Despite this impressive-sounding pedigree, the S6 is unfortunately disappointing. Audi claims a 0-60-mph time in the low 5-second range, though in our testing we did no better than 5.7 seconds. That's slower than the supercharged V6-powered A6 3.0T, let alone its hard-core competitors from BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz.
The S6 is at a handling disadvantage as well, with a hulky 59-percent of its weight hanging over the front tires causing significant understeer. It doesn't ride particularly well either, as standard 19-inch wheels and a sport suspension produce a bone-jarring time for all over rough pavement. Other cars in the class don't have this problem. Luckily, 18-inch wheels are an option.
So while driving the S6 fails to impress, few faults can be found with its cabin. Trimmed in leather and aluminum with birch wood accents, the S6 carries on the Audi tradition of finely wrought interiors. The amply bolstered front sport seats provide good support during aggressive driving, though if you dislike that hugged feeling, the A6's normal seats are a no-cost option. Interior room is spacious, with plenty of room for four passengers to travel in long-distance comfort. The recently updated MMI electronics controls make using the car's myriad high-tech features much easier.
Is the S6 a bad car? Absolutely not, and it's actually a bit of a bargain compared to its competitors. However, when those competitors have names like M5, E63 AMG, CTS-V and XFR, we wonder how many customers in this price range wouldn't mind paying a little extra for a whole lot more.
Used Audi S6 Models
The present-generation Audi S6 debuted for 2007. Few changes have occurred since then. There were slight styling tweaks for '09, while the MMI electronics interface and navigation system were given a welcome upgrade for 2010.
Available only for 2002-'03, the previous, second-generation S6 featured a torquey 4.2-liter V8 whose 340 horses were made more accessible by a five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Oddly, this edition of the S6 came as an Avant (Audi-speak for "station wagon") only, which was partly responsible for its 2-ton curb weight and scarce availability.
Zero-to-60-mph acceleration was in the low 6-second range, and the car's lowered and stiffened suspension and 17-inch wheels and tires made it a potent handler, with grip similar to that of the current S6. Other pluses included its opulent interior and ample standard features list; the wagon's big drawback was its unimpressive gas mileage. Though hard to find, a used second-generation Audi S6 wagon offers an intriguing blend of performance and utility.
Born at a time when Audi's model-naming system was in flux, the first-generation S6 officially came to life (and death) in 1995, though essentially the same car had been sold for a few years previous as the S4. Available as both a sedan and a wagon, the original Audi S6 offered an eccentric turbocharged, 227-hp five-cylinder engine, working through a manual transmission to drive all four wheels. While performance was decent for the day, this iteration of the S6 never made much of a mark on the history books.

The engine has 34hp and 214lb ft, although it can achieve 51hp. The motor acting on the front wheels delivers 80bhp and 162lb ft, but can supply up to 139hp momentarily.
BMW's new diesel-electric hybrid system is rated at 356hp and 590lb ft.

The power of 255hp per ton, or just 7hp per ton below that of the current 414hp 4.0-liter V8 M3. It's not surprising, then, that it is claimed to go from 0-62mph in 4.8sec and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Those figures match the M3's.

The production version of the BMW Z4 is driven by a six-cylinder engine, the GT3 car is powered by a 4.0-litre eight-cylinder engine similar to the unit used in the BMW M3 GT2. This powerful heart produces over 480 bhp. Its excellent performance characteristics and good torque curve make the base engine from the production version of the BMW M3 predestined for use in motorsport.

2011 Vauxhall VXR8

The previous Vauxhall VXR8 representing the old version of the lower-spec ClubSport R8, the new VXR8 is now based on HSV E3 GTS model, just launched in Australia. The new are packing heavily revised front- and rear-end styling, a new cabin and a raft of new technology to enhance its appeal to drivers in search of one of the last, great rear-drive V8 super-saloons.

The styling design get ‘Shockwave’ grille, LED daytime running lights and sleek new wing-vents mark the new car out from the front, while the rear features a new ‘Superflow’ rear spoiler, LED tail lamps and twin exhaust tips that mimic the shape of the front grille.
The new Vauxhall VXR8’s race-bred chassis uses MacPherson struts/progressive rate coil springs at the front and a multi-link independent set-up at the rear. But for the first time on a VXR8, Vauxhall has employed Magnetic Ride Control (MRC), a suspension system which adapts up to 1000 times a seconds to road conditions and driver inputs.
Based on technology used in GM’s current Corvette ZR1 supercar, MRC works by sending an electric current through damper units filled with ’soft’ magnetic particles. These particles harden as the input reaches its maximum value, providing drivers with exceptional levels of ride, handling and stopping power.
It is equipped MRC is Launch Control, which is engaged when drivers select the ESC’s (Electronic Stability Control) Competition Mode. The system dictates the level of torque delivered to the rear wheels for maximum acceleration, according to surface conditions. All the driver has to do is floor the throttle and let the car do the rest.
2011 Vauxhall VXR8 powered by fourth generation 6.2-litre LS3 unit produces 431PS and a massive 550Nm of torque, enough to propel the VXR8 from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a governed top speed of 155mph. As before, drive is delivered to the rear axle via either a six-speed manual or auto transmission, working through a mechanical limited slip differential.
In interior there are tull leather trim is now standard, and front occupants are cocooned in special HSV Performance Seats with eight-way adjustability. A new instrument cluster and surround, centre stack and switchgear provide a cleaner and more integrated look, while standard equipment also includes Aux-in/USB inputs, iPod support and Bluetooth with phone book display and touch-screen dialling.
As before, Vauxhall has introduced EDI, or Enhanced Driver Interface. EDI connects with the on-board computer to constantly stream real-time vehicle dynamics and performance to the car’s main 5-inch monitor. At the touch of the screen, drivers can access a variety of data such as vehicle G-forces, power and torque and lap times – even the degree to which their Vauxhall VXR8 is drifting. Completing the clever package is the ability for drivers to download data, such as track day performance, and analyse it using the MOTEC i2 software provided.
